| | | 11-1 - Borussiaīs Finest Hour | | | | [31.10.] On November 6, 1982, or 24 years ago next Monday, Borussia beat Arminia Bielefeld 11-1 and set an all-time record. No one had ever scored 10 goals in one half and it has not been matched to this date. On Saturday, 48 hours before the 24th anniversary of this match, BVB will once again meet Bielefeld. However, this time, an 11-1 result is out of the question... | | | | | Manfred Burgsmüller scoring one of five goals in this scene against pityful Arminia goalie Olli Isoaho. | It is still difficult to describe what happened back then - it was outstanding, phenomenal, sensational. It was a highlight, a once-in-a-lifetime event. The period between 4:29 PM and 5:15 PM on November 6, 1982 has gone down in Bundesliga history. 34.000 spectators in the Westfalenstadion could not believe what they were seeing - was it really happening? A fascinating match developed in front of their eyes. Perfect football, a team on a roll, a team playing itself into a dream. The Westfalenstadion became an "Arena of Sensation". Unbelievable what footballers can do with the ball, including hitting the back of the net: Ten goals within 46 minutes. Bang! Bang! Bang! 11-1.
Nobody could have forseen what occurred on November 6, 1982, a day for the Guiness Book of World Records. It was a wonderful day with a Borussia team that you could only love and cherish, playing football from a different world.
With all respect for Borussia, letīs not forget Bielefeld either. Arminia was punished mercilessly, they were literally "laid to rest". People felt pity for them. They were fighting for the first 45 minutes, despite missing wingers Rautiainen and Lienen (both out with the flu) as well as Horst Wohlers (yellow card suspension).
They were not aware of the avalanche of goals that would come over them. "No, no", said the stunned Bielefeld coach Horst Köppel later, "I have never experienced anything like this." He did not try to search for excuses and did not blame it on his players. "I assume this state of shock will stay with us for a few days. I will try to talk with my players and support them morally." Köppel also promised: "We will not let this get to us. We will come back." The poor Bielefeld team was scheduled to celebrate Norbert Droniaīs wedding-eve party, but the dishes had already been smashed up in the afternoon.
 | | Not the same match, but the same era: BVB's Mirko Votava in a one-on-one battle with a Bielefeld player. | And the Dortmund players? "Pity", said Lothar Huber, the outstanding offensive defender, "pity is not an issue in a situation like that. We have once allowed 12 goals as well, back then in Düsseldorf against Mönchengladbach." But those 12 goals did not come in such a compact way, not as massive as the goal avalanche against Arminia. Köppel backed his men and showed a professional face: "Itīs okay," he said, "to bash on an opponent who is already on the ground."
Borussia enjoyed their brightest afternoon to the full extent. Bernd Klotz admitted: "I was terribly disappointed when the referee blew the final whistle." Sure thing! The team played brilliantly, constantly pushed by coach Kalli Feldkamp. And they made no mistakes. Manni Burgsmüller catapulted himself to the top of the scorer list with five goals. Bernd Klotz, the sympathetic young player, who had only shown a great work rate just prior to that time, but had scored no goals, scored three times. Lothar Huber, coming down the wing from defense, pulled everybody in and set the tone.
But how was it possible anyway that a match could turn like that? That a well-functioning system as practiced by Bielefeld, could be taken apart like that? "The decisive moments", commented Feldkamp, "were the two goals right after halftime in the 46th and 47th minute." After that, Arminia was shocked. And they were thoroughly unprepared for the super-sub Bernd Klotz, who came on for the injured Erdal Keser. Bielefeldīs defender Dirk Hupe, who had enjoyed a decent match until then, was helpless against Burgsmüller and Klotz from then on and the Bielefeld defense fell apart. Borussia pushed Arminia against the wall and celebrated the game: Outstanding, phenomenal, sensational! Thank you very much for this wonderful football afternoon!
