BVB pick up the pace after the break: 1-1 draw at TSV 1860 Munich

[24.07.] On their way home from their training camp in Stegersbach (Austria), Borussia Dortmund made a stopover in Munich to play a pre-season match at 1860 on Saturday afternoon as part of the club´s 150th anniversary celebrations. A gifted penalty was one of the presents for the home side. Ludwig stepped up to convert it before BVB´s guest player da Silva equalised 10 minutes from time to make it 1-1 (0-0), ensuring that BVB stay unbeaten in the pre-season.

In pouring rain and in front of a crowd of 12.300 at the Stadion an der Grünwalder Strasse - a lot more are actually not allowed in the stadium that used to have a capacity of 40.000 - the game saw little action in the first half that only had one highlight: Schmelzer, who had scored from a similar distance against Bursaspor, tested 1860 goalkeeper Kiraly from 20 yards with a free-kick after a foul on Lewandowski.

Borussia, who played without Sebastian Kehl - following the tough training camp, in which he trained well, the BVB skipper was given a rest - had more possession but were unable to turn their territorial dominance into chances.

But as in the other pre-season games, this changed after the break, and Kiraly suddenly had a lot more work to do. In the 50th minute, for example, he was forced to keep out a header by Hummels, and five minutes later the 1860 keeper denied Lewandowski who had been set up by Kuba.

However, the goal was scored at the other end: after a challenge for the ball between Nsereko and Owomoyela, the referee, to the surprise of many, awarded a penalty for the "Lions" which Ludwig converted with a fierce shot in the middle of the goal (70). Nsereko had a chance to double the lead five minutes later before da Silva went close for BVB at the other end (76).

BVB´s guest player, who´s been keeping himself fit for almost two weeks now, then scored the equaliser from a corner in the 80th minute. Shortly after, Götze almost slotted home the winner but was denied by substitute goalkeeper Tschauner who was then lucky when Kuba´s 85th minute shot went over the bar. BVB dominated the final stages of the game, but the second division side somehow managed to withdraw the pressure to earn a draw. Next up for Borussia is a pre-season match at Dynamo Dresden on Wednesday night.

BVB: Weidenfeller - Piszczek (64. Owomoyela), Hummels, Subotic (64. Santana), Schmelzer (46. Dede) - Sahin (64. Feulner), Bender (64. da Silva) - Kagawa (46. Kuba), Lewandowski, Grosskreutz (46. Götze) - Rangelov (64. Hajnal).
Goals: 1-0 Ludwig (70., penalty), 1-1 da Silva (80.).
