| | | | | 1-3: Freiburg come back from behind -
BVB concede three goals in final 30 minutes | | | | [8.05.] Borussia Dortmund ended the 2009/2010 Bundesliga campaign with a defeat. On the 34th and final matchday of the season, BVB slumped to a 3-1 (0-0) loss at Sportclub Freiburg. Borussia were the better side for 60 minutes and took a 1-0 lead through Barrios, but the home side managed to turn the game around in the final 30 minutes. | | | Boris Rupert reporting from Freiburg
In front of a 24.000 crowd, among them Germany coach Joachim Löw, at the small, but atmospheric "Stadion an der Dreisam", BVB controlled proceedings for long periods and took the lead 56 seconds after the interval through Barrios who was set up by the lively Kevin Grosskreutz. The hosts fought back and went in front within 10 minutes through goals from Idrissou (60 mins.) and Cissé (70), who sealed the win in the fourth minute of stoppage time with his second goal.
Scenario:
In the first half of the season, the Sportclub were the Bundesliga´s worst home side, in the second half they managed to turn the Badenova-Stadion into a fortress. Freiburg lost none of their last four home games (three wins, one draw), while Borussia were mediocre on their travels, winning only two of the last seven away games. As the fifth-placed team of the Bundesliga, BVB were of course still favourites to win the tie. After all, both sides were separated by 25 points in the table. Borussia also had the better head-to-head record, losing only one of the last 10 matches at Freiburg.
 | | In the starting line-up: Dede. | Personnel matters:
Freiburg, who were only without Bechmann and Flum, made six changes to the team that drew 2-2 at Cologne last week, a result that secured their survival in the Bundesliga. BVB had to do without their playmaker Zidan as well as four defensive players, Bender, Kehl, Tinga and Owomoyela. Dede took the place of Owomoyela (pinched nerve) in the starting line-up.
Tactics:
Offensively, BVB opted for a 4-4-2 with Valdez as a deep-lying striker, defensively for a 4-2-3-1 (Valdez in central midfield). Schmelzer moved to the right of defence, Dede took his place on the left of the back four. Freiburg played with a 4-1-4-1 formation and so a massive midfield.
 | | Sahin against Banovic, who was close to be sent off and was eventually substituted. | Game & Analysis:
BVB, who had only lost one of the last 19 meetings with Freiburg (October 2001), started at a furious pace. With Germany coach Joachim Löw on the stands, Grosskreutz, after being picked out nicely on the left flank by Sahin, crossed into the box where Valdez was denied a shot on goal by Bastians (1 mins.). The resulting corner by Sahin found Barrios whose header was cleared off the line by Abdessadki.
The second chance of the game again fell to BVB who were well backed by 5.000 travelling fans: Subotic played a through ball to Grosskreutz who curled the ball from 19 yards to the far corner of the net, but Baumann, who replaced Pouplin between the sticks, somehow managed to fingertip it around the post (10).
After 15 minutes, in which BVB enjoyed 59 percent possession, the home side slowly worked their way into the game, mostly over the left side with Bastians and/or Idrissou, but they still did not muster a meaningful shot on target in the entire first half. Borussia continued to control the match and looked a lot more comfortable on the ball, but now also failed to find a way through Freiburg´s newly-formed defence.
 | | Nelson Valdez set up Lucas Barrios’ goal. | The promoted side, who had only lost one of their last seven games, had a déjá-vu experience right at the start of the second half: Valdez retrieved the ball, Grosskreutz crossed into the area, but this time he found Barrios who let off a right-footed shot from 16 yards into the lower right corner - his 19th goal of the season (47).
At this stage of the game, BVB were fourth in the (as-it-stands) table. A double change by Freiburg in the 58th minutes then marked the turning point of the game. After Subotic managed to make a last ditch clearance, Freiburg drew level from the resulting corner. Borussia were unable to get the ball away, and Hummels eventually laid the ball off into the path of Idrissou who fired home from seven yards to make it 1-1 (60). It was Freiburg´s fifth goal from a set play in the last sixth matches.
The home side, who had never managed to come from behind to beat BVB (three draws, seven defeats), were now in charge of the contest. Jäger, unchallenged on the left, crossed into the centre and found Cissé who slotted home to put his side into a 2-1 lead (70). Borussia, to their credit, refused to surrender without a fight and almost levelled again in the 77th minute, but Valdez only hit the outside of the net - the far corner would have been the better option.
The hosts now made of use of the space available. Idrissou fired over from 13 yards (86) before Cissé sealed the game in stoppage time, beating Weidenfeller with a header at the far post from a Jäger cross to make it 3-1.
Prospects:
BVB have two friendlies and a regenerative training camp before the start of the summer break. The first training of the new season takes place on 4 July.
